E.164
The international public telecommunication numbering plan.

EGP
Exterior Gateway Protocol. A protocol that distributes routing information to the routers that connect networks.

E.xxx
ITU E series recommendations - overall network operation, telephone service, service operation and human factors.

E1
European basic multiplex rate which incorporates thirty channels into a 256-bit frame and transmitted at 2.048 Mbits/s.

Echo Suppression
An attempt to reduce the feedback caused by closed-loop gain by applying a moderate amount of attenuation to an audio path. Simpler but less effective than echo cancellation.

EDGE
Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution. Enhanced GSM protocol that allows data rates of up to 384 kbits/s.

EEPROM chip
A programmable chip inserted into the telephone to permanently store numbers.

EMC
ElectroMagnetic Compatibility. The property of a signal to exist with interference (or another signal) without information loss.

EMI
ElectroMagnetic Interference. An electrical disturbance in a system due to electromagnetic waves from another electronic or electromechanical device.

EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service)
Send and receive simple melodies, images, sounds, animations and formatted text.

EoATM
Ethernet over ATM.

EoF
Ethernet over Fibre.

End call/follow-on call function
Allows a follow-on call to be made without the need to replace the handset on the base.

Error correction mode
Ensures legibility of transmitted documents.

ESD
ElectroStatic Discharge. Electrical discharge resulting from a charged object earthing through a conductive object.

Ethernet
One of the oldest and probably widest used LAN technologies. Allows data to be sent at rates of up to 10 Mbits/s over twisted pair copper wire. Compare with Fast Ethernet.

ETSI
European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Non-profit making organisation that defines telecommunications standards for Europe and beyond.

ewallet
Software application that saves you time when purchasing goods and services over the Internet by storing your particulars, including you credit card number if you want, in a secure fashion on your hard disk.
