R
RADSL
Rate Adaptive ADSL. A variant of ADSL that determines the fastest speed the line can handle at start up.
RAM
Random Access Memory. A type of computer memory that stores data in a form that can be altered during normal use.
Rate adaption
The method by which a terminals data output rate can be dynamically, usually autonomously, altered. This may be desirable to reduce the chances of network congestion for instance.
RC
Radio Cell.
RDRAM
Rambus Dynamic RAM. High-speed computer memory.
Read only file
Computer file that can be read but not amended in any way or erased.
Remote programming
The ability to change the settings of a telephone device from a remote location over the telephone network. e.g. changing the tariff settings on a payphone.
Remote reporting
Allows remote reporting of the status of a telephone device from a remote location over the telephone network. e.g. the amount of cash taken by a payphone at any given moment.
Resolution
Describes the degree of sharpness on your computer screen, measured as a matrix of dots; for example, 640x480x256.
RGB
A video signal where the Red, Green and Blue components of an image are each represented as separate signals. Synchronization information may be included with the Green signal or may be separate. Better quality than S-video.
ROM
Read Only Memory. A type of computer memory that stores data in an unalterable form.
Router
It is a device that forwards data packets from one local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) to another. Based on routing tables and routing protocols, routers read the network address in each transmitted frame and make a decision on how to send it based on the most expedient route (traffic load, line costs, speed, bad lines, etc.)
RIPng
Routing Information Protocol next generation. An Internet routing protocol that uses hop count as a routing metric. RIP is the most common IGP used in the Internet. RIPng is the new version that supports IPv6 addresses.
RS-232C
The de-facto industry standard for 9 or 25-pin serial interfaces that connect devices with various types of peripheral equipment.
RS-485
Standard for multipoint interconnections.
RTCP
Real-time Transport Control Protocol. Companion control protocol to RTP.
RTP
Real-time Transport Protocol. IP protocol that supports real-time transmission of voice and video including time-stamping and synchronising information. RTP packets are carried by UDP.
RU
Radio Unit.
